Let’s Work Together

Private lessons are a wonderful way to expand one's technical ability and to feel inspired to get out of one's comfort zone. Students are taught curriculum based on their goals and where they are starting. I pride myself on keeping kids engaged, getting young adults excited about music, and helping to push a more developed musician's approach to music.

Every person learns differently, and it is my mission to find the best way to work with each student in order to reach their goals. These goals can be focused (learn a song/play in tune) or very broad (become more aware of different styles/start a band). I like to keep lessons positive and encouraging, highlighting progress and using it to shape areas that need work.

I have spent many years studying the Alexander Technique, and find that an awareness of the whole self is crucial to playing any instrument (let alone moving through the world). With that in mind, students can expect a holistic approach to playing their instrument, creating music, and absorbing it all.

I hold a master's degree in Jazz and Improvised Music and a bachelor’s of music in Double Bass Performance from the University of Washington. In addition to learning how to teach and play music in school, I've also learned what is important in the real world. I've performed and recorded with a variety of artists including Alvvays, Jonathan Wilson, La Luz, Macklemore, Myrkur, Haley Heynderickx, Thousands, Red Ribbon, Cassandra Jenkins, Wayne Horvitz’s Electric Circus, and The Seattle Modern Orchestra

Testimonials

“Abbey is a great musician and she's everything you could want in a music teacher: inspiring, patient, thorough, and absolutely aware of just who she's teaching and what and how that student needs to learn. She's the best.”

— Andrew, parent of student

“Abbey is very professional in her teaching and conduct. She is also extremely patient with beginners, as she was with my (then) 12-year old son. It has been a privilege for my son to have Abbey introduce the instrument to him!”

— Alvin, parent of student

“I highly recommend Abbey to the serious bass player. Highly qualified with a Master's Degree, and with a natural talent for teaching, Abbey is one of the best teachers I've ever seen and motivates me to do my best. Always making sure you understand what's being taught and tailoring the lessons to your individual needs and aspirations. Abbey can find problems even you might not be aware of and helps work out a solution.”

—John, electric bass
